A bunch of inmates are released from a mental asylum to accommodate a new set of suspected lunatics caught from the streets by the police. The protagonist is one of them.
Upon release, he returns to where he used to live - an abandoned goods station located in a deserted valley.
He used to live in an abandoned, dilapidated goods wagon, which he converted into a reasonably comfortable and self-sufficient space, going to the working class standards.
The man has some skills in electrical work, and he decorated the wagon using battery-operated lights. The man also assembles a radio and some other equipment.
The valley has only a shepherd family living there - a boy, his sister, their old grandpa, and a flock of sheep they tend to.
On his return from the asylum, he notices that a female sex worker has occupied one of the wagons next door.
A big factory building also has come up on the end of the valley. From the shepherd boy, the man learns that the building is for manufacturing chemical weapons.
