Roshni (Sridevi), an aspiring singer, lives with her mother, Sharda (Reema Lagoo). She does not know anything about her father because her mother chooses not to disclose the identity of her father.
Sharda learns she is suffering from a fatal illness and will die soon. She asks Roshni's Uncle (Avtaar Gill), a family friend, to take Roshni to Mumbai so that Roshni can learn to live without her mother.
In Mumbai, Roshni meets Rahul Malhotra (Rahul Roy). When Rahul learns about her ambition, he helps her build a singing career. Soon Roshni becomes popular.
Jagannath alias Jaggu (Sanjay Dutt), a petty thief, is devoted to Roshni. Jaggu falls in one-sided love with Roshni, but she rejects him for his lower socio-economical status.
Jaggu promises to bring everything for her, and he does the same in a short period by illegal means. In the meantime, Sharda (Reema Lagoo) reveals that Prakash Chadha is the father of Roshni, who has to abandon his family due to unavoidable circumstances and presently lives in Hong Kong. Roshni now decides to go to Hong Kong to meet her father with Rahul.
Rahul keeps drugs (Cocaine) in Roshni's bag without letting her know. At the Hong Kong Airport, the police arrest Roshni, and Rahul flees from there.
Jaggu learns about Roshni and visits Hong Kong. He promises to save Roshni. Jaggu needs an Attorney (Advocate). He finds Prakash Chadha (Anupam Kher), an Attorney, but runs a Bar. Jaggu starts working for Prakash without knowing that he is the father of Roshni.
In the end, Jaggu successfully convinces Prakash Chadha to fight for Roshni. Prakash learns that Roshni is his daughter. He suggests Roshni accept the crime before the prosecution proves it because, in Hong Kong, there is a death penalty for the crime. However, Roshni refuses to accept the crime she has not done. Consequently, the court gives the death penalty to Roshni.
