Thakur (Shreeram Lagoo) lives in a village with his wife (Vidya Sinha). Gopal Singh (Sachin) is a loyal young man and works as a Domestic Help for Thakur and his wife. He has a sister (Beena Banerjee).
Lala Lalchand (Pran) and his son (Gulshan Grover) live in the same village. They torture the village people as and when possible.
Jeevan (Sanjay Dutt) is the only son of Thakur. He is taking police training in the city and loves Nalini (Mandakini), the sister of an honest Police Inspector, Dushyant Singh (Anupam Kher).
Jagir Singh (Amjad Khan) is a morally good dacoit and gang leader. Lakhan (Shakti Kapoor) is also a part of the dacoit gang.
Lala (Pran) and his son (Gulshan Grover) do not like Thakur because Thakur takes a stand for the villagers. Thakur helps anybody who comes to his house for help.
In a parallel story, a police team is after Jagira (Amjad Khan) and shoots him with a bullet. Jagira seeks shelter at Thakur's house. After initial reluctance, Thakur agrees to shelter him. Jagira owes Thakur and promises to help him when needed.
In the meantime, the evil son of Lala rapes the sister (Beena Banerjee) of Gopal (Sachin). Thakur is the prime witness and decides to give testimony against Lala's son. Lala bribes the inquiry officer and makes the house of Thakur on fire.
While the house is on the burn, Jeevan (Sanjay Dutt) returns from the city after completing his police training and finds his house burning. Jeevan's mother dies, and his father is on the death bead. Thakur asks Jeevan to call the police officer so that he can record his dying statement.
The police officer has taken a bribe from Lala and is not ready to go with Jeevan. In the meantime, Thaku dies too. The enraged Jeevan kills the corrupt police officer and gets arrested.
The loyal servant Gopal Singh (Sachin) seeks the help of Jagira (Amjad Khan). Jagira rescues Jeeva from the police. Jeevan now becomes Jeeva, joins the dacoit gang with Gopal, and soon becomes the right hand of Jagira. It makes Lakhan (Shakti Kapoor) envy him.
Inspector Dushyan (Anupam Kher) wants to arrest Jeeva and Jagira. On the other hand, Jeeva wants to avenge the death of his parents from Lala and his son.
What happens next is the rest of the story of Jeeva.
