The film traces the life of the naval-chief captain of the Zamorin of Calicut (now Kozhikode) Kunjali Marakkar IV.
The film is based on Kunjali Marakkar IV, the admiral of the fleet of the Zamorin of Calicut. He mobilized the first naval force of the country to compete with the Portuguese invasion in the 16th Century.
Priyadarshan has directed the film. He has also written the screenplay along with Ani I. V. Sasi.
Antony Perumbavoor has produced the film. Tirru (S. Thirunavukarasu) is the Cinematographer, and M. S. Aiyyappan Nair is the Film Editor.

The film is based on Kunjali Marakkar (alternatively spelled Kunhali Marakkar), who was the title inherited by the Admiral of the fleet of the Samoothiri / Zamorin, the king of Kozhikode / Calicut (now Kerala).
There were four Kunjali Marakkars whose war tactics were defended against the Portuguese invasion from 1520 to 1600. The Kunjali Marakkars are credited with organizing the first naval defense of the Indian coast.
