Thakur (Amrish Puri) hunts a Tiger in a forest, but Thakur Sengar (Achyut Potdar) reaches there and claims the tiger. In a fit of anger, both shoot each other. Sengar dies immediately, and Thakur becomes seriously injured.
Thakur Hari Singh Sengar (Pradeep Kumar), son of Thakur Sengar, vows to avenge killing Thakur and immediately visits Thakur's house. Digvijay Singh (Amrish Puri in a double role), son of Thakur, stops Hari Singh and defeats him in swordsmanship.
While they are fighting, the injured Sr. Thakur dies, and Digvijay Singh leaves Hari Singh with a warning. However, it breeds bitterness in the two families through generations.
Thakur Digvijay Singh (Amrish Puri) has a grown-up daughter Durga Thakur (Amrita Singh). He presents a Horse to his daughter. Durga can not control the horse, but Kunwar Bhanwar Singh Danga (Shakti Kapoor), a royal man, saves her. Kunwar Singh falls in love with Durga.
On the other hand, Thakur Hari Singh Sengar (Pradeep Kumar) has two sons Vishal (Romesh Sharma) and Jai Singh Sengar (Jackie Shroff). Visha is married (with Aruna Irani) and has a kid.
Jai is an angry young man and becomes violent when against wrongdoers. On the contrary, Vishal is a cool-minded man who believes in peace. Vishal goes for a higher study leaving his wife and young son.
Durga meets Jai (Jackie Shroff) and falls in love after initial fights without knowing their family rivalry history. On the other hand, Digvijay Singh misunderstands that Durga wishes to marry Kunwar (Shakti Kapoor). Thus, when Kunwar proposes to marry Durga, Digvijay Singh nods immediately.
Durga tells his father about Jai, and Digvijay Singh agrees to meet Jai without knowing his background. He also cancels the marriage of Kunwar and Durga. Kunwar does not show aggression before Digvijay Singh but secretly enquires about Jai and informs Digvijay Singh.
Digvijay Singh refuses to marry Durga with Jai. Thakur Hari Singh Sengar also does not agree to collaborate with the rival family. However, Jai sticks to his decision to marry Durga.
In the meantime, Vishal (Romesh Sharma) returns after completing higher studies and learns the entire story. He visits Digvijay Singh and convinces him to marriage of Jai and Durga. Divijay Singh asks Vishal to send his father the marriage proposal. Vishal happily returns but is killed by Thakur's men.
It is now up to Jai to avenge Vishal's death and sacrifice his love for Durga. Will he be able to carry out his duty? What happens next is the rest of the story of Mera Dharam.
