Movie Plot

The Homesickness at Cavendish Laboratory

In the early years of his career, a young, brilliant J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) finds himself at the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory, working under the demanding tutorship of Patrick Blackett (James D'Arcy).

The Cavendish Laboratory is located in Cambridge, England, far from his home in the United States. Oppenheimer grapples with homesickness and anxiety as he navigates the challenges of his academic pursuits.

The Poisoned Apple Incident

Fueled by the pressures of his studies and homesickness, Oppenheimer's emotions reach a breaking point.

In the heat of intense desperation and frustration, he leaves a poisoned apple in the laboratory, hoping it will cause harm to his strict tutor, Blackett.

However, fate intervenes when a visiting Niels Bohr (Kenneth Branagh), the renowned physicist, almost eats the poisoned apple. Realizing the danger, Oppenheimer snatches the apple away just in time and disposes of it discreetly.

Driven by Passion: Return to the United States

After completing his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Göttingen, Oppenheimer returned to the United States, motivated by the absence of research opportunities in quantum physics. He begins teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, while dedicating time to the California Institute of Technology.

Encounters with Influential Figures

Along his journey, Oppenheimer crosses paths with significant figures like Ernest Lawrence (Josh Hartnett), a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who emphasizes the importance of the practical application of scientific research.

He also meets Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), a member of the Communist Party USA, with whom he enters into an on-and-off romantic relationship until her tragic suicide.

Later, Oppenheimer meets Katherine Puening (Emily Blunt), an ex-Communist biologist. Subsequently, Oppenheimer marries Katherine.

The Call of Duty: The Manhattan Project

General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) recognizes the brilliance of Oppenheimer and approaches him with a momentous task - to lead the development of the atomic bomb as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project. However, before joining, Oppenheimer is required to affirm that he has no sympathies for communism.

Once cleared, he assembles a team of scientists to work together in secret at Los Alamos, New Mexico, with the noble aim of creating the atomic bomb to potentially save the world from the menace of the Nazis and their anti-Semitism, which deeply resonates with Oppenheimer, who is Jewish.

The Weight of Responsibility: Trinity Test and the Bombs

The war rages on, and Germany surrenders. Some scientists begin questioning the morality and significance of their work.

Despite internal doubts, the project continues, leading to the Trinity test - the first successful detonation of an atomic bomb.

The test is conducted with an inherent uncertainty about potentially catastrophic consequences and the fear of triggering a chain reaction that could end the world.

Shortly after the successful test, the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, devastating Oppenheimer with the immense destruction caused by these bombings.

Confronting the Fallout: Meeting with Truman

In the aftermath of the bombings, Oppenheimer meets  United States President Harry S. Truman (Gary Oldman), who, despite his doubts about the bombings, absolves Oppenheimer of responsibility. However, Oppenheimer holds himself accountable for the devastation caused by the atomic bombs.

The Burden of Knowledge: Discussions with Einstein

In a poignant conversation with Albert Einstein (Tom Conti), Oppenheimer reflects on the far-reaching implications of nuclear weapons and the heavy burden they bear as scientists.

This profound discussion deepens his resolve to advocate against further nuclear development, particularly the creation of the hydrogen bomb.

The Fall from Grace: Political Attacks and Security Clearance Revoked

Oppenheimer's perceived left-wing ties and association with Jean Tatlock draw suspicion from government officials.

Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), an influential figure in the United States Atomic Energy Commission, seized the opportunity to exploit these allegations and initiate a hearing to remove Oppenheimer from political influence. Actions of Strauss ultimately backfire, and he faces scrutiny for his personal grievances against Oppenheimer.

The Legacy and Redemption

In the later years of his life, the world recognizes the dedication of Oppenheimer. He subsequently receives the prestigious Enrico Fermi Award from Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

A revelation emerges, shedding light on Oppenheimer's conversation with Einstein. It had nothing to do with Strauss but rather centered around the profound uncertainty of triggering a chain reaction that could lead to the world's end through nuclear explosions.

Despite his fall from grace, Oppenheimer's contributions to science and his moral struggles continue to leave a lasting impact on the world.
