Vinod Khanna, Sridevi, Jackie Shroff, Saeed Jaffrey, and Om Shivpuri play pivotal roles in Pathar Ke Insan. The film also features Poonam Dhillon, Moon Moon Sen, Amita Nangia, Mahesh Anand, Anjana Mumtaz, Subbiraj, Satish Shah, and many others.
An angry Youngman, Arjun (Vinod Khanna), works in the timber company of Balwant Rai (Saeed Jaffrey). Mahesh (Mahesh Anand) is also working with Balwant Rai. However, Mahesh and one of his companions (Brijesh Tiwari) demand money from the workers on the salary day.
Arjun raises his voice against this atrocity and beats Mahesh. Balwant Singh calls his known police inspector Karan (Jackie Shroff). Karan is an honest and upright officer. He understands that Arjun is not guilty and thus does not arrest him. Balwant Rai gets angry and fires Arjun from the job. Both Arjun and Karan become friends now.
Balwant Rai has a company unit in Raigarh, where he goes once a month to distribute the salary. On one such occasion, some masked men try to snatch the money back from Balwant Rai. Arjun comes into the picture and compels the goon to flee. Balwant Rai realizes his mistake and requests Arjun to stay with him and manage his business. Arjun agrees, and Balwant Rai brings him to his home.
On the same night, Arjun hears the screaming voice of a girl. He comes out to find the truth. Balwant Rai tells him the screaming voice belongs to his daughter Lata (Sridevi).
Balwant Rai used to live with his wealthy father, Rai Bahadur Dina Nath (Subbiraj). He was happily married with two young daughters, Seeta (elder) and Lata. Once, he goes on a flight with his wife, and unfortunately, the plane crashes and his wife dies in the accident.
Rai Bahadur learns about the plane crash and believes that his son and daughter-in-law died in the plane crash. He made a Will in favour of his two daughters. However, since the two are minors, Rai Bahadur gives custody of his granddaughters to their family doctor Prashant (Om Shivpuri).
Late Balwant Rai returns safely, but Rai Bahadur dies. Balwant Rai nurtures his two daughters. Grown-up Seeta (Poonam Dhillon) becomes a proficient Sitar player, whereas grown-up Lata (Sridevi) becomes a skilled dancer.
One day, while Seeta and Lata perform together, the chords of Sitar break down. Seeta takes it as her defeat and runs into his car to commit suicide. Lata follows her in the car but unfortunately witnesses her elder sister committing suicide. Lata holds herself responsible for the death of his sister and becomes mentally unstable.
Arjun makes a false rape attempt on Lata. When Lata reacts to save her dignity, Arjun realizes Lata is not mentally unstable. He suggests Balwant Rai take Lata out of his room in the open air. Soon Lata shows a speedy recovery.
Doctor Prashant (Om Shivpuri) suggests the marriage of Lata. Balwant Rai finds Arjun suitable for her daughter. However, Balwant Rai does not know that Karan (Jackie Shroff) loves Lata for a long and wants to marry her.
Lata gets married to Arjun, and Karan somehow accepts the truth. One day while Balwant Rai goes outside, Lata sees Seeta (Poonam Dhillon). Lata follows her and reaches the same place where Seeta committed suicide. Suddenly Arjun (Vinod Khanna) appears and pushes Lata from the mountain cliff to die.
Who is Arjun? Why he killed Lata? Is it for money or something else? Whether he is alone, or he has some partners in crime? Film Pathar Ke Sanam gives replies to all such queries.
