Production

  • The longest Director-Composer-Lyricist trio in Tamil Cinem that included Mani Ratnam, A.R. Rahman, and Vairamuthu, respectively, ended with Ponniyin Selvan: Part One.
  • The trio began with A.R. Rahman's debut on Mani Ratnam's Roja (1992). Since then, A.R. Rahman has composed, and Vairamuthu has penned lyrics for all Maniratnam films.
  • Director Mani Ratnam and music composer A.R. Rahman did not work with lyricist Vairamuthu following the latter's #MeToo allegations and controversy.
  • Since the start of his career in 2007, Karthi has never worked with the same director twice. However, doing Ponniyin Selvan, he has broken that unspoken rule since he has previously worked with Mani Ratnam in Kaatru Veliyidai (2017).
  • Silambarasan was part of the cast but left the project after Nayanthara entered since his previous relationship with the actress did not go well. Later, due to scheduling conflicts, Nayanthara also opted out of the project.
  • In 2020, Anushka Shetty had also signed on for the film but reportedly left once she found that lyricist Vairamuthu was still working on the project at that time.
  • Keerthy Suresh was also originally part of the film but left to join Annaatthe (2021).
