The story of the film Rang begins with depicting a middle-class self-content family consisting of Mr. Joshi (Bharat Kapoor), his wife Mrs. Joshi (Rita Bhaduri), their college-going son Yogi Joshi (Kamal Sadanah), and a school going daughter.
Pooja (Ayesha Julka), the daughter of Ajay Malhotra (Jeetendra), studies in the same college as Yogi and is in love with him. On the other hand, Yogi considers her only a good friend.
Soon, Yogi meets with Kajal (Divya Bharti), and they fall in love with each other. Divya lives with his mother, Indu (Amrita Singh), and her maternal grandparents, Madhav Singh (Kader Khan) and Suchitra Singh (Bindu).
Mr. Joshi (Bharat Kapoor) works in the factory owned by Indu (Amrita Singh) and soon gets fired when Joshi supports the demands of the labours.
Ajay Malhotra (Jeetendra) meets with Mr. Joshi (Bharat Kapoor) and makes a plan to dethrone Indu (Amrita Singh) from the post of chairperson.
Ajay Malhotra successfully becomes the new chairperson of the company. He is a kind-hearted person and keeps soft corners for the employees.
The story further reveals that Ajay Malhotra is the husband of Indu. It means he is the father of both Pooja and Kajal.
Without knowing that Kajal is his daughter, Ajay Malhotra learns that Pooja is in love with Yogi. He immediately fixes the marriage of Pooja and Yogi. However, Yogi asks his father about Kajal, his love interest.
Mr. Joshi emotionally asks Yogi to forget Kajal and marry Pooja. Yogi eventually agrees to his father's wish and breaks up with Kajal. However, when Kajal shows immense love towards him, Yogi meets Pooja and tells her about Kajal, his love interest. Pooja gets shocked and makes a suicide attempt.
Ajay Malhotra learns about Kajal, meets her, and requests her to pave the way for his daughter, Pooja. Kajal refuses to part with Yogi. However, she is touched by Ajay's father's devotion and thinks of her father.
Kajal asks his grandfather (Kader Khan) about her father. After her mother (Amrita Singh) and grandmother (Bindu) portray her father as wicked, she eventually learns that he is not. Instead, her grandmother cheated on him.
Learning that Pooja is her sister, Kajal decides to go to the United States of America. Soon, Ajay (Jeetendra) also discovers that Kajal is his daughter. Later, Pooja also discovers that Kajal is her sister.
The situation takes a U-turn when Suchitra (Bindu) learns that Kajal has never boarded for the USA.
Where is Kajal? Since Kajal and Pooja discover they are sisters, they want to sacrifice for each other. Who will sacrifice for love? What happens to the sour relationship between Ajay and Indu? The film Rang gives replies to all such queries.
