Now a day, a web series seems to be an easy choice for film producers and celebrities. OTT platforms, during COVID-19 epidemics, have explored a new way to interact with the audience because they are getting the content FREE OF COST. This is perhaps the reason for veteran Film Maker Prakash Jha and actor Bobby Deol to make their presence in the web series.
This web series named 'Ashram' bring Bobby Deol as a Baba. The Series is now streaming live on MX Player. Prakash Jha has directed the series and eventually people are curious to know about the series. Recently Sadak-2 released with the story of such a Baba, played by Makrand Deshpande. However, Screenplay and Direction of Mahesh Bhatt made it like hell watching Sadak-2. On the contrary Prakash Jha has used his previous experience in a positive manner that makes Ashram a worth watching.
The story revolves around Nirala Baba Kahipur (Bobby Deol). Baba lives in a big luxurious Ashram. He runs many institutions like Hospitals and Schools and has many properties in the name of him or the trust. The specialty of Baba is to do charity work.
There are millions of followers who follow Baba blindly and ever ready to die for him. The Baba does charity works and even allows staying homeless people in his Ashram. He also offers work and salary against the work for his disciples and the people stay in the Ashram.
Since the Baba has a big following, ruling an opposite party want to take advantage of it. They bow to Baba and so as general people.
Ashram also depicts the story of discrimination based on casteism. The Baba supports lower cast and help them against the wrong doings of so-called upper class people. However, Inspector Ujagar Singh (Darshan Kumaar), belongs to an upper class, does not like the ideology of Baba and wants to crack him at any cost.
On the other hand, Baba has a team of experts in every field who defend Baba from the wrath of Ujagar Singh. However, things changed when a skeleton is found and Ujagar Singh takes charge of the case. Ujagar Singh soon finds suspicious facts about Baba and that he had direct connection behind the death of the person whose skeleton is found. Rest of the story tells whether Ujagar can expose Baba or not?
Before reviewing the series, Prakash Jha should be hats off for his understanding on political stories. He has also added casteism in a very dignified and real manner. The five members writing team also need applause for their good working supporting the ideology of Jha.
Prakash Jha successfully explains how general people get trapped in the hands of fake Gurus / Babas. Especially the people, who belong to socially backward and weaker section of the society, gets in the web of these fake Gurus. People do not understand the trap of fake Babas and becomes easy prey for such Babas.
Ashram enlightens the weakness of our education system and hit hard on reservation system too. The series depicts casteism issue in depth and with real aspects.
There is nothing new in the story but Jha makes you engaged throughout the series. The audience cannot even imagine whether the Baba would go behind the bar or not. The entire series looks real like we see in real life. The look of Bobby Deol is deliberately made fake to ensure the real expression of a fake guru.
Nirala Baba does every illegal activity in his Ashram does not matter whether it is atrocities on women or intoxication. The Baba also involves himself in land grabbing and some illegal activities not allowed for a common man. Ashram makes the audience remember some recent stories of fake Babas who are counting their days behind the bar.
Bobby Deol is at his best in Ashram. He really looks like a fake Baba with his fake smile and fake gesture like. His look remains realistic throughout the series. This role would definitely fetch him a filmfare award.
Darshan Kumaar is in a very important role in the film but he could not explore the full extent of his acting talent. It seems that he mimics some Bollywood actors and forgets to show his hidden talent. Otherwise, he has done a good job.
Vikram Kochhar has already shown his acting talent in a number of web series. He also does not let his director down this time too. However, the surprising entry is Chandan Roy. He has acted brilliantly and portrayed his character with honesty and full devotion.
Inspite of the aforementioned pros the series have some cons too. Ashram has many characters but the screenwriters have miserably failed to grow every character, as it was required. However, this aspect will not affect audience during watching the series.
The eight episodes long story does not end in season 1. After watching the entire series you would think whether it is a beginning? If yes then how much times it would take to watch Season 2 of it?
One more drawback of the series is its length. It should be cut down to 6 episodes. Sometimes the story appears to be dragged unnecessarily. Most importantly, Ashram never catches pace and maintains its moderate speed, which is not bad but sometimes makes the audience tired.
Ashram is a watchable Series for excellent performance of Bobby Deol. Prakash Jha gives the series a unique touch and his own style that makes it worthy to watch. If you love to watch realistic cinema with some dose of entertainment, Ashram is definitely for you.
IMDB users give a good rating of 6.4/10 to Ashram. However, Bollywood Product rates it 7/10.
