Waaris [meaning: Heir] is a Hindi (Bollywood) Family Drama film released on 6 May 1988. The film is an adaption of the Punjabi novel Kaara-Hatthi by Sohan Singh Hans.
When the lead actress Smita Patil died before the release of Waaris, Rekha dubbed the voice of Smita Patil. The initial credits in the film give a special thanks to the actress Rekha.
Swarn Yograj, Baldev Gill, and Jaswinder Singh Cheema are the Producers, and Raveendra Peepat is the Director of Waaris.
Baldev Gill is the Screenplay Writer, duo Uttam-Jagdish is the Music Director, Manmohan Singh is the Cinematographer, and Subhash Sehgal is the Film Editor of Waaris.
Smita Patil, Raj Babbar, Amrita Singh, Amrish Puri, Rajkiran, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda play pivotal roles in Waaris.
Javed Khan, Sushma Seth, Avtar Gill, Sudhir Pandey, and Navneet Nishan play important roles in the film. Pradeep Kumar, Amrit Pal, Anjana Mumtaz, Deep Dhillon, and Sardar Sohi play supporting roles in Waaris.
Kishan Singh (Pradeep Kumar) has two sons, namely Gajjan Singh (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) and Dulla Singh (Amrish Puri), a notorious one.
Kishan Singh prepares a Will and divides the ancestral property equally between Gajjan and Dulla. However, he makes the farmland in favour of the only son of Gajjan Singh. It enrages Dulla, and he threatens his father to change the Will.
When Kishan Singh refuses to change the Will, Dulla kills his father and receives a punishment of fourteen years of jail.
Widower Gajjan Singh raises three sons of Dulla, namely Thade (Avtar Gill), Dara (Sudhir Pandey), and Chhote (Javed Khan), his own son Shravan (Raj Kiran).
Shravan once sees Paro (Smita Patil) and mesmerizes by her beauty and simplicity. Paro is the daughter of a widow (Sushma Seth) and has a younger sister Shibo (Amrita Singh), who loves Binder (Raj Babbar). Soon Paro gets married to Shravan.
In the meantime, Dulla releases from jail four years earlier. Dulla wants the piece of land owned by Shravan as per the Will of his Grand Father, Kishan Lal (Pradeep Kumar).
Dulla finds a man (Ramesh Tiwari), a contractor (Thekedar), who wants to avenge his insult from Paro. He proves the Thekedar to kill Shravan, the husband of Paro. The Thekedar kills Shravan, whereas Thade and Dara kill Thekdar too.
Soon Paro (Smita Patil) learns about the evil eye of Dulla. Since Shravan, the only son of Gajjan Singh, is no more, and Paro has decided not to remarry, there would be no Waaris (heir) for the farmland.
Paro now decides to bring an heir to the family. She compels Gajjan Singh (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) to marry her younger sister Shibo (Amrita Singh), who loves Binder (Raj Babbar).
