Plot Summary of Hindi Film Gumrah (1963)

Gumrah (1963) is a Romantic Musical Thriller Hindi Movie released on 18 January, 1963. The movie is produced and directed by B.R. Chopra.  The movie was proved to be a Blockbuster by earning Rs. 2.5 Cror and became one of the Top Ten Highest Grossing Bollywood Movies of 1963.

Gumrah (1963) won the Certificate of Merit for Third Best Hindi Feature Film. Shashikala won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Mahendra Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Mala Playback Singer for the song Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se. 

Gumrah (1963) Movie Plot: Kamla (Nirupa Roy) lives in Mumbai with her husband Ashok (Ashok Kumar) who is an established attorney. Kamla’s  yonger sister Meena (Mala Sinha) is still unmarried and resides at Nanital in her parental house. 

Kamla gets pregnant and comes to Nanital for her delivery.  She comes to about Meena’s loves interest Rajendra (Sunil Dutt) who works as a Singer. Kamla approves Meena and Rajendra’s collaboration and decides getting them married. She gives birth to a healthy baby, however, before she could inform her husband about the affair of her sister she dies falling from a cliff.

Meena is forced to marry with Ashok for taking care of his new born child. After marriage Meena shifts to Mumbai and everything seems to become normal until Rajendra reaches Mumbai. Meena starts meeting him secretly. Soon Leela (Shashikala) saw Meena meeting with Rajendra. Leela claims to be wife of Rajendra and starts blackmailing Meena who has to choose one between Ashok and Rajendra to get rid of all crisis.

 

Gumrah [meaning: Mislead} is a Hindi (Bollywood) Action Crime film released theatrically on 3rd August 1993.

There is one other Hindi film named Gumrah, released in 1963.

Cast and Crew

Mahesh Bhatt is the Director, and Yash Johar is the Producer of Gumrah (1993).

Sujit Sen and Robin Bhatt are the Writers, the duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal is the Music Director, Anand Bakhshi is the Lyricist, Pravin Bhatt is the Cinematographer, and Sankla is the Film Editor of Gumrah.

Budget and Box Office Collection

The tentative budget of Gumrah was 3 Crore INR. The film did commercially well and earned approximately 8 Crore INR at the Worldwide Box Office. The film became one of the Highest Grossing Hindi films of 1993.

Movie Plot

Roshni (Sridevi), an aspiring singer, lives with her mother, Sharda (Reema Lagoo). She does not know anything about her father because her mother chooses not to disclose the identity of her father.

Sharda learns she is suffering from a fatal illness and will die soon. She asks Roshni's Uncle (Avtaar Gill), a family friend, to take Roshni to Mumbai so that Roshni can learn to live without her mother.

In Mumbai, Roshni meets Rahul Malhotra (Rahul Roy). When Rahul learns about her ambition, he helps her build a singing career. Soon Roshni becomes popular.

Jagannath alias Jaggu (Sanjay Dutt), a petty thief, is devoted to Roshni. Jaggu falls in one-sided love with Roshni, but she rejects him for his lower socio-economical status.

Jaggu promises to bring everything for her, and he does the same in a short period by illegal means. In the meantime, Sharda (Reema Lagoo) reveals that Prakash Chadha is the father of Roshni, who has to abandon his family due to unavoidable circumstances and presently lives in Hong Kong. Roshni now decides to go to Hong Kong to meet her father with Rahul.

Twist in the story

Rahul keeps drugs (Cocaine) in Roshni's bag without letting her know. At the Hong Kong Airport, the police arrest Roshni, and Rahul flees from there.

Jaggu learns about Roshni and visits Hong Kong. He promises to save Roshni. Jaggu needs an Attorney (Advocate). He finds Prakash Chadha (Anupam Kher), an Attorney, but runs a Bar. Jaggu starts working for Prakash without knowing that he is the father of Roshni.

In the end, Jaggu successfully convinces Prakash Chadha to fight for Roshni. Prakash learns that Roshni is his daughter. He suggests Roshni accept the crime before the prosecution proves it because, in Hong Kong,  there is a death penalty for the crime. However, Roshni refuses to accept the crime she has not done. Consequently, the court gives the death penalty to Roshni.

Awards

Sridevi received a Filmfare Nomination for Best Actress at the 39th Filmfare Awards 1994.
