Guilty - Hindi Film 2020

Guilty is an Indian Hindi-language ( Thriller ) film released directly on the OTT platform Netflix on 06 March 2020.

Movie Synopsis

Naanki Dutta (Kiara Advani) is in love with Vijay Pratap Singh (Gurfateh Singh Pirzada). Everything appears smooth until another college girl Tanu Kumar (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor) used #MeToo to frame rape charges against Vijay Pratap Singh.   Pratap Singh hire a renowned lawyer Mirchandani (Dalip Tahil) to defend the case. Danish Ali Baig (Taher Shabbir), Jr. to Mirchandani, starts investigating and collecting evidences for what actually happened on the Valentine’s Day. 

Star Cast

Kiara Advani, Gurfateh Singh Pirzada, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor and Taher Shabbir in lead role. Manu Rishi Chadha, Dalip Tahil, Chayan Chopra and Fahad Ali are in supporting role.

Guilty Full Story

Naanki Dutta (Kiara Advani) lives in a Girls Hostel and studies in St. Xavier College where only meritorious students get admission. Naanki is a song writer in a college band in which Vijay Pratap Singh (Gurfateh Singh Pirzada) is also a member. 

Tanu Kumar (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor), a girl from Dhanbad, is a new entry in the college and have some issued with Naanki from the day one. She always wants to be close to Vijay who cannot ignore her due to his polite nature. Naanki often feels offended due to the unexpected behavior of Tanu. 

It is Valentines Night 2018 when Vijay is chilling out with Naanki and his friends when Tanu comes to them. Naanki leaves the place immediately. Tanu started seducing Vijay in front of his friends who also leave to give them privacy. The next day Tanu makes a Tweet saying Vijay has raped her on Valentine’s Night. Everyone including Naanki gets shocked and she stopped interacting with Vijay. However, Vijay confesses to have mutual sex with her on the day because he was drunk. Vijay also claims that Tanu is making a lie to take advantage of him being a man from privileged family.  After initial confrontation Naanki is convinced that Tanu is not raped. 

Vijay Pratap hires a renowned Lawyer Mirchandani (Dalip Tahil) and instructs him to win the matter at any cost but he hides that Tanu has already files a Police Case on 15.02.2018 i.e on the very next day the alleged incident happened. 

Mirchandani hands over the matter to his Jr. Danish Ali Baig (Taher Shabbir), who starts investigating and collecting evidences for what actually happened on the Valentine’s Day. During investigation Danish uses Video camera whenever she invites any of Vijay’s friends to examine the matter. Danish observes that someone has hiding something specially Naanki who appears to be very suspicious at times. 

Pratap Singh files a deformation case against Tanu. Court gives judgment in favour of Pratap Singh fining Rs. 5 lakhs over Tanu since the opposition lawyer did not resist much. However, it is yet to be decided whether rape was done or it was merely a sex with mutual consent. 

Music

There is no particular song in the movie. However, two songs are played in the college function and one song is played in the background. 

Background Music is and songs have been composed by Ankur Tewari. Background music is slow and comes only when it is required. Since the movie is basically deals the youngster music is made keep that thing in mind. 

Story and Screenplay: Story and Screenplay of the movie is written by the Atika, Kanika and the director Ruchi Naraiyan herself. The screenplay is written keeping in mind of those young generation people who use abusing slang language and lots of shits in their talks and think they are very cool. 

Acting

The entire movie revolves around Kiara Advani and rest of the artists appears to be in supporting roles. Kiara has beautifully played the role of a modern blunt and vigilant girl just because of the circumstances faced by her which she cannot share with anyone.  She has brilliantly expresses her love, emotion, frustration, attitude and will power to fight for the right. 

Gurfateh Singh Pirzada as Vijay Pratap Singh has lived a dual personality in the movie. He is a polite gentleman at a given point of time and becomes a violent privileged man when the investigating Lawyer wants to carved out the truth. The he remains there on screen throughout the movie but his character has not been imprinted by the Director. He or his character does not get the desired focus even after being the lead character of the movie. His performance is above average and experience would nourish his acting skills. 

Taher Shabbir as Danish investigates the matter in his own way. He records the statement of witnesses and later uses the same to find out the truth. He is a man of principle. But Taher has given a single expression throughout the movie which also suits his character. He is good in his job and done well.

The last important character in the movie is Akansha Ranjana Kapoor and Tanu Kumar. She played the character of such a modern girl who has come from a small town and have seen an entirely different environment and drifts with the flow without thinking its consequences. She has given comparatively less screen space but she has successfully expresses emotions of a girl as a Victim/assailant. 

Direction

Ruchi Narain has already directed a Mystery Thriller Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow (2005). During these 15 years he directed two more movies. However, while directing Guilty the main agenda of director could not get a clear intention. She is also co-written the movie hence her commands over Direction should be more gripping.  Abusing language has been used many a times without any valid reason just to make the movie more attracting for youngsters. The story also gets confusing sometimes. 

Whenever you make a Mystery Thriller or Suspense Thriller, it should have a clear agenda and the climax of the movie does not fulfill the criteria at all. Though experimenting is not a bad idea at all but Guilty this movie was meant for entertainment and not for any social message. Merely giving a social message in the climax does not make any sense. 

We have seen many masala movies which give social messages like Three Idiots, Munna Bhai MBBS and Peepli Live etc. Agenda of these movies were very clear and their directors focused on the theme in addition to reflect other masala elements. However, Guilty cannot be regarded up to the mark as far as theme is concerned.    

Inspite of these entire odds movie remains interesting from the beginning and curiosity of audience is maintained till the last 15 minutes of the movie and thereafter the movies loses its charm. Yet the director has done a good job with an experimental cinema. 

Movie Review Guilty (2020)

Guilty is for Modern youngsters only. Family cannot watch the movie sitting together. It is strange that highly meritorious students, who prefer talking in English rather than Hindi, use derogatory remarks and abusing language in Hindi, against a woman. However, for youngsters the movie can be proved appealing and worth watching for at least once. Movie is a mixture of Drama with a little thriller. 

Pros: Good acting, above Good Screenplay, Good Direction despite some odds.

Cons: Average Songs, Abusing Language, Slow pace of the movie, weak climax.
