Gopinath Chavhan (Samarth Sonawane) is a 14-year-old boy from a family of manual scavengers. He often goes with his drunken father, who works in a morgue, to help him sometimes at the civil hospital.
Due to going to the morgue, Gopi believes that his clothes smell of dead bodies and human excreta. Moreover, he belongs to a lower caste, and his classmates harass him with casteist remarks.
Gopi is good at studies and is tops in the Sanskrit language examination. He is invited to an event to collect a prize for topping a Sanskrit exam, sparking an obsession with obtaining Kasturi, an Indian musk with a divine scent mentioned in the Hindu mythological stories he enjoys.
