Gauri started an organization called the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust in 2000. This group helps transgender people and people with AIDS/HIV.
She was the first transgender person to ask the apex court in India to let transgender people adopt children. The court agreed and said that transgender people are like a third gender.
Gauri adopted a girl named Gayatri in 2008. Gayatri's mom had died because of AIDS.
