Tere Naam is a remake of the 1999 film Sethu featuring Vikram in the lead role. Salman Khan replaced Vikram in the Hindi remake of Sethu. Tere Naam is considered one of the best performances in his acting career.
Bala is the director of Sethu, who took inspiration from a real-life incident of a friend, who had fallen in love, lost his mind, and ended up at a mental asylum.
Salman Khan and Bhumika Chawla play the lead roles in Tere Naam. The film also features Ravi Kishan, Sachin Khedekar, Sarfaraz Khan, and many others.
Mahima Chaudhry makes a special appearance in the song O Jaana. Daisy Shah also makes a special appearance as Background Dancer in the song Lagan Lagi.
Tere Naam became a moderate box-office success. However, its soundtrack album was a blockbuster. Salman Khan received high appreciation for his portrayal of Radhe Mohan. The performance can easily be considered his best performance in Hindi films.
The tentative budget of Tere Naam was Rs. 10 Crore. The film gained commercial business by earning approximately Rs. 25 Crore at the Worldwide Box Office.
Radhe Mohan (Salman Khan) is a tough guy without a job and hangs out with a rough crowd. He lives with his brother Ajay (Sachin Khedekar), sister-in-law Gayatri (Savita Prabhune), and their child. Although he can be aggressive, he sometimes does good things, like standing up to those who harass others.
Radhe develops feelings for Nirjara Bhardwaj (Bhumika Chawla), a student at his old college. Nirjara belongs to a humble family and lives with her father, who works as a temple priest (Saurabh Dubey).
Radhe assists Nirjara on several occasions, and it appears that she has a liking for him too. One day, Radhe playfully proposes to her and mentions that he might have to persuade her father if he doesn't approve of their marriage.
Nirjara is too shocked to say much and utters "Yes" when Radhe asks her if she is listening to him. Radhe interprets this as her acceptance of the proposal. Later, Radhe and his friends, including Aslam (Sarfaraz Khan), intimidate Nirjara's fiancé Rameshwar (Ravi Kishan).
The following day, Radhe brings a gift for Nirjara, but she tells him that she doesn't love him and calls him a tough guy. Feeling heartbroken, Radhe attempts to talk to her, but she continues to ignore him and refuses to have any conversation with Radhe.
Radhe's friends suggest that he give up rowdyism and violence to impress Nirjara, but one day, he roughs up a brothel owner who had beaten up one of his friends. Nirjara witnesses this incident, leading to misunderstandings.
As Radhe is about to punch the brothel owner, Nirjara arrives at the scene, and Radhe stops the violence, allowing the brothel owner to escape.
Subsequently, Nirjara's elder sister Mamata Indira Krishnan), who needs money, is nearly tricked into prostitution when she visits the brothel to meet a man who promises her a loan.
Radhe, who does not know Mamata is Nirjara's sister, visits the same brothel to find a man who harasses a woman. He saves Mamata from being arrested during a police raid.
Mamta informs Radhe that her husband, Aatmaram (Dinesh Kaushik), has evicted her from home and is asking for money to give her custody of their son.
The next day, Radhe beats up Aatmaram, forcing him to take her back and stop harassing his wife, Mamta. Rameshwar (Ravi Kishan) witnesses this and tells Nirjara that Radhe is a good, selfless man who truly loves her.
Unaware of this conversation, Radhe abducts Nirjara, ironic to what Rameshwar told Nirjara about him so that she would listen to him express his feelings for her. Nirjara initially feels intimidated but ultimately falls in love with him.
Without knowing about their previous conversation between Rameshwar and Nirjara, Radhe kidnaps her, which is ironic considering what Rameshwar had told her about him. Radhe does this hoping that Nirjara will listen to him and he can express his feelings for her. Initially, Nirjara feels scared and uneasy, but soon she falls in love with him.
Subsequently, the brothel owner and his goons attack Radhe to take revenge on him for trying to shut down their business. Radhe suffers from brain damage during the attack and loses his mental balance.
Radhe's family decides to admit him to a religious institution for people with mental health challenges, while Nirjara and his friends pray for his well-being.
At some point, Radhe's mental state returns to normal, but the wardens at the institution fail to understand this and end up beating him up.
Nirjara visits the institution and finds Radhe in a pitiful condition while he sleeps. Seeing him like this, Radhe's brother (Sachin Khedekar) believes he may not recover and asks Nirjara to forget about him and marry Rameshwar instead.
On the day of Nirjara's wedding with Rameshwar, Radhe escapes from the institution and arrives at her home, only to find that she has committed suicide. Radhe then allows himself to be taken back to the institution despite his family and friends trying to persuade him otherwise.
The epilogue shows Radhe, now old and still in the institution, tying peacock feathers in Nirjara's memory.
The epilogue shows Radhe, now old and still in the institution, paying tribute to Nirjara's memory by tying peacock feathers. Radhe's love for Nirjara never fades, even during the tough times life throws at them.
