Thupparivaalan is an Indian Tamil-language ( Action and Thriller ) film released in cinemas on 14 September 2017.

Thupparivaalan [meaning: Detective] is an Indian Tamil-language Crime Suspense Thriller film released in cinemas on September 14, 2017.

The titular character of the protagonist/detective is loosely inspired by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle's detective character, Sherlock Holmes.

The 2023 Tamil film Thupparivaalan 2 is a Sequel to the 2017 Tamil-language Detective Thriller, Thupparivaalan.

Dashing Detective is the Hindi dubbed version of Thupparivaalan. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) issued a "UA" rating to the Kannada-language film Baang, vide certificate No. DIL/2/121/2018-MUM dated April 19, 2018. The runtime of the film is 159 Minutes and 23 Seconds.

Movie Plot

Puzzling Death

Divakar (Vincent Asokan) is celebrating his birthday with his wife and young son. While the son is sitting with him on the terrace and the wife is coming upstairs a sudden lightning strikes. The thunder and lightning burn Divakar and his son to death.

A Mysterious Officer's Demise

During a cinema outing, a man's inappropriate behavior leads to chaos. ACP Paul Dhanarajan steps in to resolve the situation but shockingly passes away during a police meeting under mysterious circumstances.

Meet Detective Kaniyan Poongudan

Kaniyan Poongundran (Vishal) is a young and intelligent detective lives with his assistant, Manohar (Prasanna). Kaniyan is a man of principle and does not accept cases that go against his conscience.

Encounter with Mallika

Kaniyan encounters a pretty girl, Mallika (Anu Emmanuel), while she tries to pickpocket at a public place. Later hearing her story, Kaniyan allows Mallika to stay in his house as a domestic helper.

A Young Boy's Plea

One day, an innocent schoolboy named Naveen visits Kaniyan with money in his piggy bank. He wants to find out the killer of his dog, Nemo. Kaniyan agrees to investigate the case without any fees. Naveen gives the bullet found in the body of Nemo, the dog.

Forensic Analysis and a Clue

Kaniyan discovers that the bullet is a 9mm one and requests his friend for a forensic analysis the same. Later Kniyan finds a tooth at the crime scene. The tooth leads him to Swarnavel (Ashvatt), a former university professor.

Unraveling the Mystery

Kaniyan remembers a news article about a happening where Dhivakar and his son lost their lives. He goes to Mrs. Dhivakar's house, and she tells him that she heard the thunder followed by, which struck her husband Dhivakar and their son. 

Intrigue and Suspicions

Kaniyan finds out that Swarnavel was at a construction site nearby on the day of the incident. He then discovers that Swarnavel might have created fake lightning to harm Dhivakar because Mrs. Dhivakar heard the thunder before seeing the lightning. It makes sense because light travels much faster than sound, which is a common fact.

In the meantime, a suspicious man named Kamalesh (John Vijay ) goes to a travel agency to give a sofa filled with money to five people who own the agency and are supposed to be killers: Devil (Vinay Rai), Muthu (K. Bhagyaraj ), Pritha (Andrea Jeremiah), a chubby man, and a man with no hair (Dheeraj Rathnam).

Dangerous Investigations

When the assassins learn that Kaniyan is on their tail, Devil disposes of the body of Swarnavel, who was killed earlier.

Kaniyan and Manohar visit Dhivakar's office and learn that the tender, supposed to be awarded to Dhivakar, is now with Ram Prasad (Jaya Prasad), the chairman and head of the company that Dhivakar competed with. Ram Prasad gets killed before Kaniyan reaches him.

Confrontation and Escalation

Kamlesh hires some Chinese goons to kill Kaniyan, who defeats them and learns the involvement of Kamlesh. While Kaniyan tries to visit Kamlesh, Pritha reaches there and kills Kamlesh.

Unraveling Threads

Katiyan witnesses Pritya (Andrea Jeremiah) escaping from the crime scene with the bald man (Siddhanth Venkatesh) on separate motorbikes. A police team follows the criminals but fails miserably when the bald man kills himself by performing seppuku, allowing Pritha an opportunity to escape from the scene.

Lethal Intentions

Later Pritha tries to kill Kaniyan in a shopping mall. However, Mallika saves him. Muthu also tries to inject Kaniyan with a poison dart, but Manohar becomes the victim of the poisonous dart and gets admitted to a hospital.

The connection between the poisonous darts

Kaniyan discovers that the poisonous dart, which hit Manohar, is the same one used in the case of ACP Paul Dhanarajan while he went to a cinema hall.

Tracing the Source

On inquiry from the cinema hall, Kaniyan discovers that someone booked three film tickets in different rows. Kaniyan finally learns the address of the travel agency from the credit card details recorded at the cinema hall during buying film tickets.

Unveiling the Plot

However, before Kaniyan reaches the travel agency belonging to Devil (Vinay Rai), Muthu, and Pritha, Devil kills Muthu to cover his tracks. Kaniyan finds some physics books related to lightning and a machine that generates artificial lighting.

A dangerous threat

Devil is now after Kaniyan. He sends an SMS saying that his beloved ones are in danger. Kaniyan first fears for Manohar (Prasanna), his assitant-cum-friend, who is in the hospital for his treatment after the hitting of poisonous dart. The other one is Mallika (Anu Emmanuel), with whom Kaniyan has gradually fallen in love.

The story builds toward a final confrontation between Kaniyan and Devil. As danger looms over his loved ones, Kaniyan must outsmart Devil's plans to save them.
