Masaan (2015) is a Bollywood Drama film is an Indo-French Production collaboration and initially released in the 68th Cannes Film Festival, France, on May 19, 2015. Thereafter, it was released in France on June 24, 2015 and finally it was released in India on July 24, 2015. The movie is directed by debutant Neeraj Ghaywan. The movie was critically acclaimed by the critics but did not get commercial success. Film received many awards including National Awards and Film Fare Awards for Debutant Director. Vicky Kaushal won Zee Cine Awards for Best Debutant Male. The movie depicts several social issues very effectively.
Movie Plot: Masaan is a mixture of two stories of Varanasi, U.P. which run parallel in the movie. First story is of a college teacher Devi (Richa Chadda) who was caught by Police which having sex before marriage with Piyush her student who commits suicide in Hotel Bathroom by slitting his wrist. Now Police demands a huge bribe of Rs. 3 Lakh to dispose of the case. Devi’s Father Vidyadhar (Sanjay Misra) tries hard to pay the about to close the matter.
Second Story is of Deepak (Vicky Kaushal) belongs to a lower community ‘Dom’ who use to burn funeral pyres. Deepak falls in love with Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi) who belongs to a High Caste Hindu Family. They indulge in physical relation too and Shaalu shows her commitment towards Deepak even after knowing about his caste.
