Sholey is Hindi -language ( Action , Adventure and Revenge ) film released in cinemas on 15 August 1975.


The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) issued an (U) rating to the Hindi -language film Sholey, vide certificate No. U-79165-MUM on 12 August 1975 . The runtime of the film is approximately Not Available Minutes.


Sholey initially received negative feedback from critics but later mouth to mouth publicity made the film a blockbuster that breaks many records and become the Highest Grossing Indian Movie ever at that time.

Sholey (1975) proved blockbuster on Box Office by earning 35 Crorest Worldwide agaisnt a budget of merely 3 Crores and became the Highest Grossing Movie of 1975 followed by Jai Santoshi Maa, Sanyasi, Deewaar and Pratiggya. Sholey is considered in top 10 of Indian movies of all time.

Sholey was shown at Minerva Theater (Mumbai) continuously for over five year (286 weeks). The record was broken after 26 years by Shahrukh Khan starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

Sholey: Awards and Nominations

Sholey was nominated under 9 category in 23rd Filmfare Awards held in the year 1976. These nominations includes  Best Film, Best Actor: Sanjeev Kumar, Best Director: Ramesh Sippy, Best Supporting Actor: Amjad Khan, Best Comic Actor: Asrani, Best Story: Salim-Javed, Best Music: R.D. Burman, Best Lyrics and Best Singer: Anand Bakshi and R.D. Burman, respectively, for Mehbooba Mehbooba. However, the award was won by M.S. Shinde for Best Editing.

Sholey (1975) Movie Plot

Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), a retired Police Officer, hires two petty thieves Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) to catch a dreadful Dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) who killed his family and cut his two hands and now creating terror in village Ramgarh. 

Veeru and Jai accepts the offer and thinks to loot handicapped Thakur too but drops the idea when caught by Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), young widow of Thakur’s Son. Jai falls in love with Radha and wants to marry her. On the other side Veeru falls for Basanti (Hema Malini), a very talkative village girl.

Veeru and Jai plan to settle down in live with their respective love interest and to win the heart of Thakur by killing Gabbar Singh. When Gabbar comes to know about the two he attackes over Ramgarh and a cat & mouse game begins.
