While coming to Bombay from Allahabad by train, Ram (Jeetendra) loses his baggage and wallet that contains his rail ticket. In an attempt to escape from the railway police for being without a ticket, Ram meets Rahim (Dharmendra), a taxi driver. Rahim helps Ram, brings him to his home, and arranges a taxi for Ram.
On the first day as a taxi driver, Ram meets Reshma (Madhuri Dixit), the foster sister of Rahim, who studies in a college and lives separately. Ram and Reshma often meet and fall in love together.
In fact, Ram is the Deputy Commissioner of Police and is in search of the murderer of a politician, Niranjan Das (Satyendra Kapoor). Police know that a truck driver killed Niranjan Das. Since several truck drivers live in the surrounding area where Rahim lives, Ram befriends Rahim. However, Ram soon becomes a close friend of Rahim.
The problem ensues when he learns that Rahim is the murderer of Niranjan Das. Now, Ram has to choose between friendship and duty.
