Filmfare Awards a prestigious and one of the oldest Awards given to the Artists of Hindi Cinema to admire and encourage their talent. These Awards were initiated in the year 1954 when the 1st Filmfare Awards was held on 21 March, 1954. The 3rd Filmfare Awards Ceremony also held in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the year 1956.
Initially there were no nominations for the Awards and the Awards were given in five categories. That is why only five Awards were given in the 1st Filmfare Awards under five categories i.e. Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Music.
However, during 2nd Filmfare Awards (1955), the numbers of awards were increased from 5 to 7 by dividing Best Actor and Best Category in two subcategories Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Technical Awards were also given for Best Sound.
