3rd Filmfare Awards 1956

Filmfare Awards a prestigious and one of the oldest Awards given to the Artists of Hindi Cinema to admire and encourage their talent. These Awards were initiated in the year 1954 when the 1st Filmfare Awards was held on 21 March, 1954. The 3rd Filmfare Awards Ceremony also held in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the year 1956.

Initially there were no nominations for the Awards and the Awards were given in five categories. That is why only five Awards were given in the 1st Filmfare Awards under five categories i.e. Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Music.

However, during 2nd Filmfare Awards (1955), the numbers of awards were increased from 5 to 7 by dividing Best Actor and Best Category in two subcategories Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Technical Awards were also given for Best Sound.

6. Best Supproting Actress - Nirupa Roy for the movie  Munimji (1955)

7. Best Music - Hemant Kumar for the Man Dole Mera Tan Dole from Nagin (1954)

Technical Awards

1. Best Sound Design- R. Kaushik for the movie Amar (1954)

2. Best Art Direction (B&W)- Rusi Banker for the movie Mirza Ghalib

3. Best Cinematographer- Dwarka Divecha for the movie Yasmin

4. Best Editor- Hrishikesh Mukherjee for the movie Naukari

3rd Filmfare Awards Highlights

• Most Awards Jagriti and Biraj Bahu (2 each). 

• Bimal Roy won the 3rd consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Director. He won 1st for the movie Do Bigha Zamin (1953), 2nd for Parineeta (1953) in the 1st Filmfare Awards 1954 and in the 2nd Filmfare Awards (1955), respecitively.

• The Song Tan Dole Mera Man Dole from Nagin (1954) for which Hemant Kumar won Filfare Best Music Award was ranked 2 in the Binaca Geetmala Annual List of 1953.
