Filmfare Awards History

The Filmfare Awards is one of the oldest awards given to the artists of Hindi Cinema to acknowledge, encourage and honor their exceptional talent in Bollywood.

Filmfare Awards, with the time, has stood among the most prestigious Awards given in the Indian Film Industry.

The Filmfare Awards were initiative of Filmfare Magazine of the Times Group. Initially these awards named “Clare Awards” after the name of Clare Mendonca, editor of The Times of India.  The First Filmfare Awards ceremony held on 21 March 1954 at Metro Cinema in Bombay (now Mumbai).

In the year, 1954 National Awards were also introduced. A panel of juries appointed by Government of India was responsible to decide National Awards. On the contrary, Filmfare Awards were decided by voting from general public and a committee of experts from film industry.

Filmfare Awards Early Stage

At the early stage readers of Filmfare Magazine used to vote for the awards. Trofies were awarded to the winners of the highest popular votes.

Initially there were no nomination for the Awards and the Awards were given in five categories in the First Filmfare Awards (1954) i.e. Best Film, Best DirectorBest ActorBest Actress and Best Music Director. Thereafter, some categories were added from time to time.

Do Bigha Zamin (1953) received 2 awards out of total 5 awards given. It won for Filmfare Best Film and Filmfare Best Director, which was received by Bimal Roy.

Dilip Kumar received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Daag (1952) whereas Meena Kumari Received Best Actress Award for Baiju Bawra (1952) which also received two awards. Music Director Naushad won the second one for the song Tu Ganga Ki Mauz.

The 2nd Filmfare Awards (1955) were also having five categories. However, two new categories were derived from Best Actor and Best Actress and named Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

The Filmfare Trophy portrays a woman with raising hands in a dance position. The trophy is commonly known as "The Black Lady. Initially it was made of Bronze thus making the trophy heavier. Thereafter, while celebrating 25th years of Filmfare Awards the trophy was made of Silver. Similarly, it converted into gold while celebrating 50th Filmfare Awards.
